PSHE & RSE
At Lindow Community Primary School, our Relationships Education, Health Education, RSE and promotion of British Values are an important part of our wider curriculum and school culture. Our aim is to ensure that all children, including those with SEND and additional needs, develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for the next stage of their lives.
Our PSHE curriculum supports children to understand themselves, their relationships with others and the wider world. Through age-appropriate teaching, pupils learn about kindness, respect, boundaries, healthy relationships, emotional wellbeing, physical health, safety and personal responsibility. They develop the confidence to recognise when something is not right, know how to seek help and make safe and informed choices.
From September 2026, we follow the revised DfE statutory guidance for Relationships Education, RSE and Health Education. The updated guidance places a strong emphasis on prevention, safeguarding, positive and respectful relationships, online safety, inclusion, appropriate language and helping children recognise and respond to risks. It also reinforces the importance of working transparently with parents and carers and ensuring that teaching is appropriate to pupils' age, development and individual needs.
Our updated PSHE and RSE programme is organised into six key areas:
- My Healthy Self – supporting physical and mental health and positive lifestyle choices.
- Connecting with Others – developing healthy relationships, respect, communication and boundaries.
- The Online World – understanding online safety, influence, risks and responsible digital behaviour.
- Growing Up – learning about physical and emotional changes, puberty and developing independence.
- Staying Safe – recognising risks, keeping safe and knowing how and when to seek help.
- Citizenship – exploring rights, responsibilities, diversity, communities and financial wellbeing.
Learning takes place through weekly, whole-class lessons, alongside links across the wider curriculum and everyday school life. Lessons provide opportunities for discussion, reflection and developing pupils' ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings respectfully. The programme also encourages pupil voice and reflection, helping children to consider how their learning applies to their own lives.
RSE is taught explicitly through our PSHE and science curriculum and is carefully sequenced to ensure that children receive clear, accurate and age-appropriate information as they grow. Sensitive topics are taught by familiar adults in a safe, supportive environment, with appropriate consideration given to pupils' individual needs and experiences.
Through our progressive PSHE and RSE curriculum, children develop the knowledge, confidence and life skills they need to keep themselves safe, build positive relationships, respect themselves and others, understand the world around them and thrive as responsible members of our community.
