Year 6 - Miss Oakes

Welcome

Welcome to our Year 6 class! We are looking forward to an exciting and memorable final year at Lindow, full of challenge, creativity, discovery, adventure and achievement. Our aim is to create a positive, supportive and ambitious environment where every child feels valued, confident and inspired to make the most of their final year of primary school.

Year 6 is an important and exciting stage in children’s education as they become the oldest pupils in school and prepare for the transition to secondary school. We encourage children to take greater ownership of their learning, develop their independence and embrace new challenges with resilience and confidence. This year provides an opportunity for children to reflect on how far they have come whilst developing the skills, knowledge and attitudes they will need for the next stage of their journey.

Throughout the year, our learning will be centred around a range of engaging topics and inspirational texts, providing opportunities for children to explore important ideas, ask questions, think critically and make connections across the curriculum. Our topics include Conflict & Resolution, Endangered or Empowered, Man vs. Giant, Survival of the Fittest, High Hopes & Daring Dreams and Be the Change You Want to See in the World. Through these themes, children will explore both the world around them and their own place within it, developing their understanding, creativity and confidence along the way.

You can find out more about the exciting topics we’re covering this term by viewing our curriculum overview.

We are also looking forward to providing children with a wide range of trips, visits and enrichment experiences throughout the year. Each half term will bring opportunities to take our learning beyond the classroom and to apply our learning in real-life contexts.

Reading continues to be a key priority throughout Year 6. We want children to become confident, fluent and enthusiastic readers, who read widely and regularly for both pleasure and purpose. Alongside developing comprehension, vocabulary and inference skills, we encourage children to explore a wide range of authors, genres and texts. Through our reading curriculum, class texts, independent reading and Accelerated Reader, children will be supported to develop their reading stamina, confidence and understanding as they encounter increasingly challenging texts.

Writing opportunities throughout the year will encourage children to develop their own voice and apply their growing knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. Through our inspirational texts and wider curriculum themes, children will write for a range of purposes and audiences, developing the ability to communicate their ideas clearly, creatively and effectively. We will encourage children to take pride in their work, edit carefully and see themselves as successful and purposeful writers.

As part of their final year, children will also be supported in preparing for their Year 6 assessments. Through high-quality teaching, regular opportunities to practise and revisit key knowledge, and targeted support where needed, we will help every child to make progress and approach these assessments with confidence. Alongside academic achievement, we recognise the importance of developing resilient, independent learners who understand that mistakes and challenges are an important part of learning and growth.

Year 6 is also a wonderful opportunity for children to develop their leadership and responsibility within our school community. As our oldest pupils, they have an important role as role models for younger children and ambassadors for the Lindow attitude. Through roles such as House Captains, School Councillors, Sports Ambassadors and our Head Boy and Head Girl, children will have opportunities to contribute to school life, support others and take an active role in our wider community. Our school values of Caring, Learning and Achieving will continue to underpin everything we do. Children will have opportunities to demonstrate these values through supporting younger pupils, including their Reception buddies.

We’re looking forward to a fantastic final year of learning, laughter, adventure, challenge and achievement, as we help our Year 6 children make the most of their final year at Lindow and take their next exciting steps towards secondary school.
