Science at Lindow Community Primary School

At Lindow School, Science is taught through the White Rose Science curriculum, which follows a small-steps towards mastery approach. Learning is carefully sequenced so that children build scientific knowledge and understanding over time, securing key concepts before progressing to more complex ideas.

The curriculum uses a spiral approach, revisiting important areas of science such as Animals, Including Humans, Rocks, and Earth and Space throughout a child’s journey through school. By returning to these concepts at increasing levels of challenge, children deepen their understanding, strengthen long-term retention and make meaningful connections between previous and new learning.

While developing scientific knowledge is important, we place equal value on helping children to think, speak and work like scientists. Regular discussion and oracy activities encourage pupils to use ambitious scientific vocabulary, explain their thinking, justify predictions and communicate conclusions with confidence. Through purposeful talking tasks, children learn to discuss scientific ideas clearly and accurately.

Practical enquiry is at the heart of our science curriculum. Children are given regular opportunities to develop their working scientifically skills by asking questions, planning investigations, making observations, collecting and analysing data, identifying patterns and drawing evidence-based conclusions. These hands-on experiences help pupils develop the physical and procedural skills required to work as scientists whilst fostering curiosity, resilience and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

By combining a mastery approach, a carefully designed spiral curriculum and rich opportunities for scientific enquiry and discussion, we aim to nurture confident, inquisitive learners with a lasting appreciation of science and its importance in everyday life.
