Lindow Community Primary School is privileged to have a purpose-built resourced provision for deaf children. Places are available for children that have a moderate, severe or profound hearing loss as their primary need. The provision is led and managed by a qualified Teacher of the Deaf and in addition to this, has a number of specialist teaching assistants. 

Our policy is to ensure that our deaf pupils are fully included into all aspects of school life. First and foremost, the children are members of their mainstream class, with additional opportunities provided for specialist speech and language teaching within the resource base. Specialist teaching assistants provide support in the classroom and within the base, with the aim of ensuring that the children are able to access the national curriculum alongside their peers.

We follow a total communication approach, which means we deliver teaching using auditory-oral speech, Sign Supported English (SSE) and/or BSL, alongside visual symbols.  The Teacher of the Deaf and teaching assistants all hold BSL qualifications ranging from Level 1 - Level 6.  Our skilled staff have experience of working with children who use BSL as their primary communication mode and recognise the value of deaf role models for all our children.

At Lindow Community Primary School, we are proud to deliver the Specialist Deaf Curriculum across the whole school, ensuring that all children, both deaf and hearing, benefit from an inclusive and enriching learning experience. Through the curriculum, children develop an understanding of deaf history, identity, culture and heritage, alongside learning about communication, access to sound, and the diverse experiences of the Deaf community. This whole-school approach promotes inclusion, celebrates diversity and fosters respect, empathy and belonging for every learner. 

We are also proud to be the first primary school in Cheshire to offer British Sign Language (BSL) to all children as part of our curriculum entitlement. By providing every pupil with opportunities to learn and use BSL, we are breaking down communication barriers, championing inclusion and empowering children to become confident communicators in a diverse world.
